Day 1

Updated: Jul 2, 2018

On Monday we met at the Old Medical School with our leaders, Till and Medhat. The Edinburgh Medical School is split over several campuses and the Old Medical School is the site of the original medical, its still used for teaching and it was nice to get a sense of the history of Medicine and medical research at Edinburgh.

The day began with an ice breaker activity which was a fun way to get to know our fellow students and teachers better. We each presented ourselves, talked a bit about our backgrounds and what had led us to studying CMID. The diversity in our cohort is huge, which made for really interesting conversations over lunch! Kim's lecture on Global Health was fascinating and the inclusion of data using gapminder was really cool, and something I'd not seen that before. After lunch we were fortunate to have a presentation on well-being which made me more aware of the services the uni provide for us in this area, and it was clear they wanted us to feel apart of the university even though we are distance learners. The section on the library and how to make the best of it was very useful, I am stuck in my ways a little bit and always plump for pubmed when searching for articles. It was also great to have highlighted the sites that will be useful with citing and referencing when completing the dissertation next year. Fran's workshop on the dissertation made me realise the enormity of next year's task, but where she put it into context of how much we had already done, or were used to doing, I felt more confident in my ability to at least come up with a half decent piece of work for one of the poor professors to read. A very interesting day, and it was nice to be a full-time student again, its been a long time!
