Day 2

Updated: Jul 2, 2018

Today our group travelled with Medhat to Western General Hospital. The registrar separated us into two groups of three and we followed them on their rounds. I was with Amal and Tara and we followed Doctor Evans. The doctors did not disclose names, but discussed any relevant medical history of the patients and how they were currently being treated, as well as what they were looking to alter or test further for. The two hours spent there was highly interesting, to gain an insight into the various infectious diseases in the area at this time, and the doctor also gave some history of diseases that had been in other areas of Scotland two or three decades ago. With their medical and pharmaceutical knowledge, Amal and Tara asked questions regarding prescribed treatment, and as a pharmacist was on the rounds, this enable them to really discuss some of the differences they had encountered in the various parts of the world they have practised.

I was a little amazed and completely impressed by the existence of an entire ward devoted exclusively to infectious diseases! As a pharmacist, I really enjoyed having a moment to chat with a pharmacist practising in Scotland, to see the ways in which our practice is both similar and different. We had the opportunity to see a number of very interesting complex cases. Tara Hoop

The morning was a fantastic and different way to learn and I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated the time on the ward.

Tara, Amal, Calvin and I went to the Edinburgh Dungeons after lunch. I won't spoil it for anyone that hasn't been, but it was very good, funny, and not for those afraid of the dark! Calvin and Amal went on the drop ride, Tara and I watched, hilarious! The four of us then walked up Royal Mile and got a drink in the pub before heading to George IV bridge and finding a delicious Tapas restaurant. Now full and in my hotel resting my feet, I am looking forward to the day tomorrow at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh.
